2018-03: Panama Canal

Continuing our ferry from Baltimore to Hawaii, here is the third leg of Ka Lani Kai’s travels. (See 2017-12: Bahamas Ferry for the first leg.)

As a reminder, here’s the overall plan:
Move the boat in 4 segments. Sail a segment during a block of time off, leave the boat somewhere safe, then work to save another block of time off to sail the next segment.
1) Maryland to Bahamas (Completed)
2) Bahamas to Nicaragua through the Panama Canal (Partially completed…left the boat in Panama)
3) Nicaragua to Mexico (Adjusted: Panama to Mexico)
4) Mexico to Hawaii

Chris, Cheryl and crew did the second leg from Bahamas to Panama with me, sniffle, but the Panama Canal leg I wouldn’t miss for the world! So here we go!

The Boat:
Ka Lani Kai, Chris’s Catana 50 Sailing Cat.

The Crew:
Chris and Cheryl are Captain/Co-Captain. They are husband and wife, he’s an airline pilot in my company and she is a flight attendant at another company.
Gary and Patty are able crew. Patty works with Cheryl as a flight attendant and Gary is able to conduct work from the Sat phone while underway. They own a 60′ yawl together.
Adam is stow/away and helm helper. I work with Chris as a First Officer and own my own Cal 39 sailboat.
Yayoi is Adam’s wife and First Mate (in both contexts, life and sea).
Paul is another stow-away and helm helper, one of Chris and Cheryl’s friends.

This third leg had a few crew swaps:
Panama to Las Perlas: Chris, Cheryl, Gary, Patty, Adam, Yayoi, Gary.
Las Perlas to El Salvador: Chris, Cheryl, Gary, Adam, Yayoi.
El Salvador to Mexico: Chris, Cheryl, Gary, Paul.

The Route:
Shelter Bay Marina, Panama through The Canal and Las Perlas, stop-over at Bahia Del Sol, El Salvador, then on to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico.
